SO MENA Celebrates the International day of persons with disabilities


SO MENA joined forces with the United Nations, Ministry of Youth & Sports, Ministry of Social Solidarity & the Egyptian Federation of Culture & Sports to celebrate the 24th annual UN’s International day of people with disabilities at El Gezira Youth center under the theme: “ Inclusion matters”: Access & empowerment for people of all abilities with the presence of the Egyptian Minister of Youth & Sports “ Khaled Abel Aziz”,

representative of the Secretary- General of the UN “Ban Ki-moon”: Sawsan Ghosha, SO MENA Regional President & Managing Director “Ayman Abdel Wahab”, Football Celebrities & distinguished guests


The celebration started with SO athletes oath “Let me win.. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt”; followed by the speech of SO MENA Regional President & Managing Director “Ayman Abdel Wahab” who gave the keynote speech addressing the importance of inclusion and acceptance to create opportunities to help realize the full potential of people with all abilities and promote increased awareness and support related to social inclusion of people with disabilities worldwide. 


In his statement, he also stressed on the importance of the unified sports to improve perceptions about the remarkable abilities & competitive spirit of SO athletes. The inclusive Unified Sports program combines athletes with intellectual disabilities and individuals without these disabilities as teammates on sports teams for training and competition which gives a clear & distinct message that the ID athletes are no different than other. Wahab said.


Afterwards, the representative of the Secretary- General “Ban Ki-moon” (Sawsan Ghosha)addressed that International day of persons with disabilities draws awareness to persons with disabilities and the problems they are faced with in their everyday lives.   Yet we know it is estimated that persons with disabilities around the world make up 10% of the population, and 80% live in developing countries. Therefore, we look ahead to strengthen policies and practices of inclusivity with persons with disabilities so that we can move our world forward by leaving no one behind.


The Minister of Youth & Sports “ Khaled Abdel Aziz” gives the first Football kick, then the unified Football match started, attendees are grouped into 2 teams bringing together people with & without Intellectual disabilities along with celebrities and Football players.


Preceding the unified Football match, all attendees were entertained by the musical performance of SO MENA Sargent Shriver Global messenger “Omar El Shenawy” who played drums and enjoyed the entertainment show presented by SOE athletes under the name “ Around the World”
